Tiivistelmä
The mobility of people has increased through globalization under the past decades. People move to other countries for different reasons for example to work. This has led to that different cultures are colliding when people face each other in different situations. When people are moving around the world they obtain new cultures on the way when they get exposed to new different cultures. This phenomenon has led to that organizations, especially multinational and international organizations have more and more multicultural employees. Nowadays, many leaders and colleagues have hard time understanding each other because of the different cultural backgrounds.
In this thesis I will take a closer look what are the strengths and weaknesses of these people who have been exposed to more than one culture and are called bicultural individuals. Because these individuals have been exposed to more than one culture they have knowledge and skills they have gained from each of their cultures. This can be a really great benefit for the individual but at the same time this can cause challenges for the individual and people around her or him. To learn more about bicultural individuals I conducted an interview with four bicultural individuals who had moved to Finland from some other country. The interviews revealed that people who move around and get exposed to new experience and cultures during their lifetime gain great richness like flexibility and greater understanding. At the same time these individuals face challenges fitting in and understanding others.
Through this thesis I learned that these bicultural individuals gain much more positive from being an bicultural individual than weaknesses. In the end, even though there are many situations where these bicultural individuals can face 3 challenges they still according to the interviews manage to find more positive aspects and strengths than negative.
