Identifier Service is the service provided by the National Library of Finland where identifiers are applied from the Finnish ISBN and ISSN agencies. Currently, the publishers can send their requests for their publication through a web application operated by the National Library of Finland. The current web application is very simple with very limited features and has usability issues.
This thesis aims to provide a solution that improved the current web application by reimplementing it is using modern web technologies. It also describes in detail some of the major web technologies and tools used in this thesis and their advantages as well. The new application consisted of new features with improved user experience and usability. For design and implementation, the multitier architecture which is three-tier architecture was chosen for the scalability and maintainability of the application, whereas on the design approach, single page application architecture was chosen for the speed and responsiveness of the application.
The result shows that the new web application is considerably faster than the current application. User experience and usability were also improved considerably in the new application. The study also shows that, choosing the right application architecture design is one of the key things in application or software development. The added new features in the new application not only benefit the customers but also the administration.
