Liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a ship fuel has received increased attention in recent years due to its lower emissions compared to traditional marine fuels. On ships, natural gas is stored in insulated tanks in its liquid form to save space. In this work, both vacuum insulated double-shell tanks and polyurethane foam insulated single-shell tanks are investigated.
The goal of this work is to investigate the commissioning and decommissioning procedures required for LNG fuel tanks. Based on this research, a tool for estimating the time and amount of consumables needed for the procedures is built. During the commissioning and decommissioning of LNG tanks, a change of atmosphere in the tanks and cooldown or warm-up of the tanks are required. The theory behind the atmosphere changes, and heat transfer in LNG tanks is presented.
For changing the atmosphere inside of the LNG tank, different methods, including vacuum purging, pressure purging, and sweep-through purging are investigated. For cooling the tank down, cooling with cold nitrogen gas, liquid nitrogen, and LNG is investigated. Warm-up of the tank with either warm nitrogen or warm natural gas is also presented in this work.
The results of this work show that changing the atmosphere in the tank through pressure purging is the preferred method for LNG tanks, as the tanks are designed to withstand a pressure increase, and the amount of consumables needed is lower than during sweep-through purging. Cooldown of the tank with cold nitrogen gas is shown to be an inefficient method. When the cooldown is performed with liquid nitrogen or LNG, less time and a smaller mass of liquid are needed compared to cooling the tank down with cold gas.
Overall, the results show that the commissioning and decommissioning procedures for LNG tanks require a considerable amount of time and consumables. Therefore, the estimation tool developed in this work can help in the planning of the procedures, and thus, time and resources can be saved. In the future, when more measured data on actual commissioning and decommissioning procedures is available, can the estimation tool be further evaluated and improved.
