The aim of this study in Caring Science is to investigate how people who have had orthorexia describes their own experiences of recovery and what they consider could be determining factors for recovery. The research questions are: How can recovery from orthorexia be experienced? Which factors could be determining for recovery from orthorexia? A total of five people from Finland och Sweden have been interviewed and the data has been analyzed by the qualitative content analysis method.
The analysis resulted in four categories and two themes. The categories "inadequate understanding of orthorexia" and "difficulty in assessing the recovery" created the theme "a challenging mental process" and the categories "recovery resources" and "health changes" created the theme "improved health". The category "recovery resources" provides answers to the second question of the study. A coherent understanding has been created with a reflection on the concepts of "health" and "ill health" and the boundaries between them and against Eriksson's health-theory and the love- and mercy thought (caritas). The conclusion of the study is that recovery from orthorexia can be experienced with mixed emotions, partly because recovery is a challenging mental process that gives rise to negative emotions and partly because recovery contributes to improved health in terms of, for example, feelings of well-being, freedom and pleasure.
