Tiivistelmä
The purpose of this Master’s thesis is to reveal the meaning of the concept “Passion” from a caring science perspective through an etymologic and semantic analysis, and in addition to clarify the role of passion in the context of human health.
The study is based on two research questions at issue, firstly “What is passion?” and secondly “What is the impact of passion for the human health?” The first research question is unfold etymologically and semantically based on a determination of concept model by Eriksson and Koort. The second question regarding the impact of passion on human health is answered by comparing the results of the etymologic and semantic analysis in relation to Wärnå-Furu’s research (2014) about health and passion.
The theoretical starting points of the study are based on the view that caring science is a human science. The study is of a hermeneutic character. The methodology is based on Gadamer’s philosophical hermeneutics. Furthermore the study is of a qualitative nature. The research material for the etymologic and semantic concept analysis was collected via dictionaries and thesauruses.
The results of the concept analysis show that the concept of “Passion” includes four different themes: feeling, lust, longing and suffering. When a person has the opportunity to affirm his passion by the choice of his own, then his viability is strengthened and the possibilities of staying healthy increase. A compulsive passion can lead to an unhealthy mania. With an increased awareness about the human passion the caregiver is able to develop the health resources of a patient.
