Teacher identity is a central element in teacher development and is associated with terms such as subject-related knowledge or pedagogical and didactical expertise. The role of the vocational teacher can be seen as multifaceted, as the vocational teacher represents the profession to their students and the professionalism contains a complexity that the teacher should be able to convey. Professional knowledge is often "implicit knowledge" and depends on context, conditions and needs of working life. Vocational teachers therefore need to have both an identity as a teacher and an identity associated with the profession in which he or she teaches.
When starting their educational training vocational teacher students in Finland have years of subject studies and work behind them. This can give the student a strong professional identity, which later should be linked to an educational identity. The purpose of the study is to investigate how the educational identity development can be supported in future vocational school teachers, primarily seen through internship and supervision as part of the process. The primary objective of the guidance is to give students opportunities to develop in their professional role, to create a professional identity and develop the skills of the profession.
The research questions are: How do the future vocational teachers see the significance of their own professional development? How do they experience professional identity anchorage before and after the internship? The study highlights these issues with a phenomenographical research approach based on Marton and Booth (2000). Phenomenography is seen as a specialization of research on learning and understanding the educational environment, where the object of research is the variety of ways to experience the phenomenon. The theoretical background is rooted in social constructivism and concepts relating to practice theory, supervision and reflection focusing on the student's educational identity development. The empirical study is divided into two semi-structured interviews, before and after practice, with 21 respondents in the first and 17 in the second round of interviews.
The results suggest that a certain change take place in the students' perceptions after completing the internship with supervision and that they target a more teacher-based identity. The supervisor's personality and professional skills are seen as valuable, especially in the initial stages of practice. Reflection with supervision is perceived to have central importance for the development of a teacher role and the student´s own teaching.
