The aim of this dissertation is to show how music and especially songs have participated in creating and expressing cultural belonging among Estonia-Swedes. In connection with this, the ideas behind the formation of a common Estonia-Swedish cultural heritage are examined as well.
In three separate articles, each based on a specific song material, answers are sought to the main research question of how songs contributed to form, express and strengthen different forms of Estonia-Swedishness from the mid-19th century onwards. Sub-questions raised are what kinds of musical practices the songs have been part of and how identity formations with songs have changed over time. Other sub-questions are how songs from other cultures have been picked up by Estonia-Swedes and what impact these songs have had on identity formations. A final set of sub-questions aims to shed light on the actors, who initiated and promoted Estonia-Swedish identity formations with songs as a tool, and the ideological bases and purposes that guided their activities.
Musical practices are approached in broadly, including activities such as singing, collecting lyrics in songbooks, listening to songs, writing about song performances, and remembering songs. A consistent feature is that cultural identity formation is seen as a processual, multi-layered process. The focus is on finding out where, when, how and by whom Estonia-Swedishness is formed, expressed or strengthened with songs. The analysed identity formations occur mainly in four different social spheres: the individual, the subcultural, the local/domestic and the regional. Beyond the spheres individuals experience in everyday interactions, there is evidence of broader imaginative spheres such as the Pan-Swedish.
The core of the research material consists of three sets of songs that differ from each other in terms of use and function. The three sets of songs can be categorized as a singer-songwriter’s songs, traditional wedding-songs and songs in handwritten songbooks. The analysis is based on reconstructions of the songs’ social settings. For this reason, supplementary research material has been collected from archives, printed sources and through interviews and email correspondence. In analyses of communication acts within social settings, three main kinds of song use occurred: song publication, song performance and entering lyrics in songbooks by hand.
The first article, “Ett värdefullt arv till kommande generationer av estlandssvenskar”: En analys av kulturarvsprocesser kring utgåvor med visdiktaren Mats Ekmans visor [“A Valuable Heritage for Future Generations of Estonia-Swedes”: An Analysis of the Cultural Heritage Processes Surrounding the Publications of Songs by the Singer-Songwriter Mats Ekman], analyzes the emergence of cultural memory and cultural heritage processes on the basis of publications of an Estonia-Swedish singer-songwriter’s lyrics after the majority of the population group migrated to Sweden during World War II.
The second article, Estlandssvenskar på Sverigeturné med körsång och ett bondbröllop på Skansen: En analys av en svenskspråkigs minoritets musikaliska bilder av sin kulturella tillhörighet under mellankrigstiden [Estonia-Swedes on Tour in Sweden with Choir-Singing and a Farmers’ Wedding in Skansen: An Analysis of a Swedish-Speaking Minority’s Musical Self-Images of its Cultural Belongings during the Interwar Period] is an analysis of reconstructed social settings in which wedding-songs were first collected, later used on stage during a tour in Sweden and finally described in newspapers. The title of the dissertation, “they were strangers and still kinsmen”, is a quote from one of the articles published in 1930 after performances in Sweden. Seen as a whole, the tour expresses two cultural belongings: pan Swedish and Estonia-Swedish.
In the third article, Visböcker i kulturella gränsland. Gemenskaper i estlandssvenskars handskrivna visböcker [Songbooks in Cultural Borderlands. Communities in Estonia-Swedes’ Handwritten Songbooks], the focus is on how Estonia-Swedes got in contact with other cultures while creating songbooks with lyrics in standard Swedish and Estonian. Spiritual songs are mainly in Swedish but the songbooks with profane songs become increasingly bilingual during the 1920s and 1930s. The concluding part of the article shows that the spiritual lyrics are a sign of connection with a Christian Pan-Swedishness while the profane lyrics are signs of multiple convergences with popular youth culture in Sweden, Swedish-speaking Finland, and Estonian-speaking Estonia.
In the discussion section, I first focus on themes that have become actualised in the study: Estonia-Swedes’ identity formation with songs in the light of cultural uniformity, cultural distance, and cultural continuity. Finally, I also discuss what kind of identity-forming tool songs have shown to be.; Syftet med avhandlingen är att visa hur musik och i synnerhet visor bidragit till att skapa och uttrycka kulturell tillhörighet bland estlandssvenskar.

In this dissertation, I examine the conceptions of household, children, and marriage that were conveyed through printed postils in the Swedish Empire 1686-1770. How and why were these conceptions expressed, and how may continuity or change be observed in the postils' teaching regarding these subjects? The source-material scrutinized in the study consists of all postils upon the gospels and epistles that were printed in Swedish (17) and Finnish (1) during the examined period, and that were written by priests in the Swedish Empire. The tripartite theme; household, children, and marriage, is related to the table of duties and to its concept of oeconomia, around which the thesis is disposed.
The thesis is based on qualitative analyses of the source material, which is contextualized by perspectives of both homiletics, intellectual history and social history. Furthermore, to expose possible tendencies of change or continuity, the postils are analyzed diachronically. Even though the genre of postils is characterized by a high degree of both continuity and homogeneity, the large source material that is taken into account in the study facilitates the identification of both differences and developments.
In the thesis, I have treated the postils as entireties, and accordingly, not merely analyzed a selection of pre-selected sermons. Such a point of departure entails that a holistic picture of the postils' teaching of the investigated subjects is demonstrated. Furthermore, it has also exposed overall structures in the postils that previous research has not been able to reveal.
Inter alia, I argue that the frequent use of the scheme of the three estates as a type of homiletical application shows that the conception of household – derived from this schema and from the table of duties – permeated the sermons of the postils. This is so, despite the fact that the household as such was rarely dealt with extensively within the framework of the postils. Furthermore, the study makes visible how the homiletic rhetoric regarding the studied subjects overall developed in a more anthropocentric way. In particular, the more intensive teaching on the education of children, which occurs more frequently in the postils printed after the middle of the 18th century, can be considered as an evidence of this. Finally, a parallel line of development is how, towards the end of the examined period, themes related to man's earthly vocation, which were common to all the themes investigated in the study – seem to have gradually been given less prominent roles in the postils. This can be explained by the changed aim of homiletics during the 18th century, which was increasingly concentrated on soteriological issues.

Rahkonen, Pauli
Personal names of the Old Testament have been more widely treated scientifically already approximately 100 years (since Martin Noth 1928). Usually scholars have been concentrated on internal structures of names, such as theophoric elements, and on semantic questions. Especially, since the last part of 1980’s several studies on personal names of the Old Testament have seen daylight. The present dissertation consists of four peer reviewed articles, which have been published in publications of theological or oriental research. In addition, the dissertation consists of a so called kappa-section containing goals of the study, methods, earlier research and summary.
The present dissertation treats its subject largely. Compared with several other explorations the aspect is different, too. The essential method concentrates on the comparison between extra biblical epigraphic onomasticon and biblical data of names. One of the goals has been to clarify to which era the personal names of the selected biblical books belong. The selected books are the Pentateuch, Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1–2 Samuel and Ezra–Nehamiah. One of the articles treats toponyms of the Southern Levant which can be dated to the second millennium BC. The goal has been to find out areal concentrations of different toponymic types. This, in turn, illustrates linguistic distributions in the ancient Southern Levant. These toponyms have also been compared with names outside of the studied region. Through the comparison the direction and dating of possible migrations has been possible to define. The article in question combines archaeology and onomastics.
Finally, we can briefly state that the fashion of given names has varied sometimes slowly and gradually, but sometimes even suddenly. The anthroponyms of the patriarchal narratives in Genesis resemble closely epigraphic Canaano-Amorite personal names from the Middle Bronze Age (ca 1950–1550 BC), which are found for example in the Mari archives or Egyptian execration texts. The onomasticon of the rest of the Pentateuch (Moses narratives), Joshua and Judges correspond mainly the epigraphic names originating from the Late Bronze Age and Iron Age I (ca 1550–1000 BC). In these books yahwistic names are extremely rare and begin to appear only in 1 and especially 2 Samuel. The Israelite epigraphic onomasticon of the Iron Age II (ca 1000–586 BC) resembles rather closely those of 1–2 Kings and Jeremiah. The high popularity of yahwistic names is a typical phenomenon during this period. Names of Ezra–Nehemiah represent mostly earlier (Late Iron Age II) types of anthroponyms, but a new fashion begins to appear, too. Ancient heroic biblical names, such as found in the patriarchal narratives, begin to emerge. They became dominant during the Hellenistic Period.; Gamla testamentets personnamn har behandlats mer omfattande i vetenskaplig mening sedan cirka 100 år tillbaka (Martin Noths publikationer).

Benyah, Francis Ethelbert Kwabena
This is an article-based thesis that explores the religious, human rights, and media dimensions of healing of mental illness at prayer camps in Ghana. Prayer camps are healing centres established across various parts of Ghana (and other African countries, e.g., Nigeria, Togo, etc). The main activities of prayer camps include prayers, fasting, Bible studies and counselling. In Ghana, prayer camps attract people from diverse social backgrounds who go to the camps to seek solution or answers to their problems. These problems may be social, economic, health, or spiritual such as infertility, barrenness, HIV/AIDS, witchcraft accusations, mental illness, education, unemployment, visa, marriage, etc. Among these, the healing of mental illnesses has become one of the dominant activities known to take place at prayer camps in Ghana. This study thus focuses on healing practices for persons suffering from mental illnesses at prayer camps in Ghana. The study has been conducted with an extensive interview with patients, prayer camp staff, and health professionals working in collaboration with prayer camps in Ghana. Theoretically, the study was guided by the concept of health and healing among the Akan of Ghana and how the understanding of healing in Akan traditional framework is recast in Pentecostal interpretation of healing especially at prayer camps in Ghana. Through an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis of in-depth interviews with patients, staff of prayer camps and mental healthcare practitioners, this study points out the varied ways in which prayer camps have assumed an important role in the healing and care for persons with mental illnesses in Ghana. The study argues that the perceived causes of mental illness and the healing practices found at prayer camps appeal much to the Ghanaian because they resonate with indigenous worldviews. It highlights the challenges associated with the healing of the mentally ill at prayer camps. Some of the challenges highlighted are chaining, infrastructural and logical constraints, and inadequate financial resources. The study further highlights the network of relationships between prayer camps and healthcare professionals as new ground that may contribute to the training and building of cultural competence for clinicians working in the field of psychiatry in Ghana. The findings made suggest that the concept of health and healing and the general understanding of the concept of the person have implications for the way mental illness is understood and treated. These concepts also influence the interpretation given to the cause of mental illness and the therapeutic interventions that are sought by patients and their relatives. The prayer camps provided social support and avenues that helped patients to deal with their illness by managing their fears, anxieties and recurrent behaviours. The camps also provided hope in dealing with chronic mental illnesses. The findings also suggest that the abuse of patients at prayer camps is influenced by ineluctable belief systems and practices as well as logical and infrastructural constraints. Another finding made in the study is that media reportages about mental illness and the prayer camps in Ghana are presented differently based on the targeted audience.; Detta är en artikelbaserad avhandling som utforskar religiösa, till mänskliga rättigheter kopplade och mediebaserade dimensioner av helande i böneläger i Ghana.
