Tiivistelmä
The lakes Vargsundet, Östra Kyrksundet, Västra Kyrksundet and Dalkarby träsk in the Åland Islands
were surveyed for aquatic vegetation in order to classify them according to the EU Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EG). The vegetation was mapped along transects both on the basis of the methodology used in Finland and the one used in Sweden. Classification of the status was done
according to both Finnish standard and Swedish classification system of vegetation in lakes to compare applicability of the criteria on Alandian lakes. Lakes Vargsundet, Östra Kyrksundet and Västra Kyrksundet were classified as poor while Lake Dalkarby träsk achieved moderate status by use of Finnish methodology. The Swedish classification resulted in Ecological Quality Ratios that were
below the lowest possible class limit in all four lakes with the use of the three different reference values indicating that the Swedish methodology for ecological classification of vegetation is not suitable for lakes on Åland. An evaluation of the proposed monitoring program for aquatic vegetation was also made.
