AI-guided design of compatible composites of birch lignin and polylactic acid for 3D printing
Salomäki, Tim
In this study, a novel design of composites involving polylactic acid (PLA) and alkaline-extracted birch lignin was explored to produce a sustainable replacement material for additive manufacturing or 3D printing. Due to the large difference in chemical characteristics of two composite components, the challenge focuses on finding an optimal recipe where lignin can partially replace PLA however still being able to maintain the performance as a material in different applications. The optimization of this recipe would have required a large number of experiments, thus in this study, machine learning was implemented in the design of experiments (DOE) to try to optimize data utilization, thereby attempting to reduce the required number of data points and experiment numbers. This implementation introduces a secondary focus of the study, which centers on streamlining the composite creation process and optimizing these composites to the desired characteristics.
It is known that when blending PLA with a large quantity of unmodified lignin, the material’s mechanical properties begin to degrade, making the material brittle. To counter this, two different plasticizers, polyethylene glycol (PEG2000) and triethyl citrate (TEC) were introduced in various amounts. To analyze the material characteristics of the composites, the thermal, mechanical, and morphological properties of the composites were analyzed. Results show that when increasing the amount of plasticizer, the glass transition temperature (Tg) decreases rapidly with blends showing a Tg as low as 7 °C. Materials were also observed to retain a much more elastic characteristic in the form of having a torsional strength of 3182.79 Mpa with a lignin to PLA ratio of up to 25% w/w.

Development and Build of an Auxiliary systems to an Optical Spray Combustion Chamber
Sjöström, Roberth
The development of internal combustion engines has never been as relevant as it is now when phasing out fossil fuels to switch to renewable alternatives. The development of injectors for internal combustion engines and ways to analyze the data without the need for multi-cylinder engines and having simulated and virtual tests confirmed can be done using an optical test rig and is a step in the right direction to develop the internal combustion engine further.
This thesis aims to develop and build the necessary auxiliary systems for an optical test rig to enable use in two operational modes: cold stage with non-reactive diesel injection in a pressurized chamber and hot stage with reactive diesel injection by performing a pre-combustion of a gas-mixture before injecting fuel.
The theoretical part studies the bachelor’s thesis by Grahn (2018), which is the reason and need for this master’s thesis. The diverse types of optical test rigs and their areas of use in research. The auxiliary systems of the various optical test rigs are analyzed to compare the concepts used. The pre-combustion technique used in optical test rigs is examined as to how the structure of the systems has been made and what advantages and disadvantages rigs may have in comparison to each other. Hydraulic system and how it can be used in the auxiliary systems, and the structure and functions of hydraulic components. Instrumented components study the function of pressure and heat sensors, how they work, areas of use, and the differences between the instruments. Piping and instrumentation diagram advantages they have during the planning and construction of building systems.
The practical part describes the planning and construction of various auxiliary systems for an optical test rig. The work was done in two stages: the cold stage and the hot stage, and the auxiliary system constructed contained a hydraulic system, fuel system, air system, and gas system. The planning for the cold stage is explained step by step with piping and instrumentation (P&I) diagrams and three-dimensional (3D) modeling, which defines how the system has been done, from planning to construction, commissioning, and testing. Like the cold stage, the hot stage has been developed with P&I diagrams and 3D modeling for the added systems to the optical test rig that needs to be used in the hot stage. In the hot stage, calculating the pre-combustion is also an essential part of the work, focusing on how the equations are used to calculate the pre-combustion composition of the gas mixture, depending on the pressure wanted in the chamber.
The result is a constant volume hot pre-combustion cell with a fully functional auxiliary system that can be used in two different operating modes. The gas calculations are made for the pre-combustion, and the calculations can be used as a reference calculator for the operator so that it is easy for the operator to pre-calculate for each test. The calculator is transferred into a matrix laboratory (MATLAB) code to automatize the gas system based on the gas calculations.; Utvecklingen av förbränningsmotorer har aldrig varit så relevant som nu när man fasar ut fossila bränslen för att övergå till förnybara alternativ.

Prototyping of lactate biosensor for non-invasive biomarker monitoring
Leino, Liisa
Biosensors are widely used in diagnostics and health monitoring in different applications. They are simple, and cost-effective tools to monitor health and diseases and, therefore, they have attracted significant interest especially during the recent years. Lactate biosensors have got into focus since lactate is an important parameter of health and fitness.
The objective of this thesis was to prepare prototypes of lactate biosensors for non-invasive biomarker monitoring. Lactate oxidase was used as a biorecognition element, which produces H2O2 during the conversion of lactate and oxygen that can be measured amperometrically. Different immobilization methods were used to investigate the possibilities of increasing the long-term stability and sensitivity of biosensors. For that, the enzyme was entrapped in a chitosan and in a Nafion matrix, it was immobilized with PEGDE and cross-linked with GA.
Three of the different methods gave promising results and with further optimizations, it is possible to increase the stability and sensitivity even further.
